Roberta Baum’s vocal skills have won her critical acclaim in Downbeat and Musician Magazine. Born in Brooklyn New York Roberta’s early days in jazz began by performing standards alongside New York’s young bloods Fred Hersch, Kenny Barron and Anthony Davis.
In 1979 she was discovered and taken under wing by jazz giant Ornette Coleman. Roberta’s composing skills flourished resulting in a new repetoire arranged by Mr. Coleman for her concert debut at the N.Y. Public Theater’s New Music Series in 1980.
Roberta Baum is a grant recipient from The National Endowments of the Arts and Meet The Composer; has been featured vocalist for recordings by jazz composer/ drummer Bobby Previte, King Crimson bassist /composer Trey Gunn and has composed music for and performed with choreographer James Reedy of the Erick Hawkins Dance Company.
Roberta’s collaborations with Ornette Coleman ignited deeper explorations of human spirit through music. Creating a new persona by the name of ” Serpentine ” birthed an entirely new path in which to perform. The world of ancient feminine archetypes, earth centered spiritual traditions, world music and ambient electronics.
As Serpentine Arborvitae, Roberta has recorded 6 CD’s of original songs devoted to the expansion of feminine consciousness honoring the wisdom of ancient cultural traditions. She is recognized by critics and authors as a fearless catalyst for feminine power in music. Serpentine’s 1995 CD ” ROCK THE GODDESS ”garnered her a commission for composing the soundtrack for Lifetime’s Intimate Portraits Series “ Witches” narrated by Anjelica Huston.
